I've been buying bags with 3 lbs of organic onions at Safeway for about $1.80.
A good price!
But REGULARLY I found that they started to rot by the time I got home. So I finally asked one of the produce guys what's up with those onions and whether there was a date anywhere on the label. (Safeway packaged) There's no date.
He claimed that the organic onions go bad faster because they're not getting the fertilizers and that there's something in the fertilizers that makes them last longer.
I think that's strange, never heard that before and I didn't find anything in a web search.
So I went to Smith a little over a week ago and the organic onions I got there (different brand) for about the same price are still great today.
Last summer they didn't have organic onions yet and the regular onions lasted WEEKS even in constant 80 to 90 degree temps.
So was the guy at Safeway feeding me BS or are there really preservatives in non organic veggies?
I suspect that the Safeway organic onions were just OLD.
